GlaxoSmithKline is taking voluntary, precautionary action to end the supply of its zinc-containing denture adhesives because long-term excessive use has been associated with potential health risks. In the UK GSK markets zinc-containing and zinc-free adhesives under the Poligrip brand. GSK will transition to zinc-free versions of all affected variants. ‘Zinc Free’ will be clearly shown on the new packaging.
Howard Marsh, chief medical officer, GSK Consumer Healthcare, commented, ‘The safety of our consumers is our primary concern. It is important for consumers to know Poligrip Ultra and Poligrip Total Care remain safe to use as directed on the product label. We are taking this voluntary action because we have become aware of potential health problems associated with the long-term excessive use of our zinc-containing denture adhesive products. These reports are very rare, given that several million people worldwide are users of the products. If anyone is concerned they may have been using the product in excess they should stop using it, talk to their doctor and switch to a zinc-free alternative. Using too much adhesive might be a sign of ill-fitting dentures. Denture wearers should see their dentists regularly to check the fit of their dentures.’ Full information is available on www.gsk.com
