Going to the dentist could help save your smile and the planet. A Sheffield dental centre is expanding its commitment to a sustainable future with a Green Charter for 2023.
One80 Dental has committed to planting more than 100 trees every month – equivalent to a CO2 reduction equivalent to 18,608 car miles per month - as part of a range of environmentally friendly measures.
The advanced dental centre has registered with Ecologi, a social enterprise that aims to reduce 55 per cent of the world's emissions by 2040 through collective action.
The award-winning Totley practice also offers patients the opportunity to be involved through Ecologi – who will plant an additional 30 trees for every pledge a patient makes.
The Baslow Road practice has also installed solar panels and an electric vehicle charging point, measures which have already saved almost three tonnes of CO2 in the last two years.
Nigel Rosenbaum, principal and owner at one80 Dental said, “2023 will be critically important to the planet. The consequences of climate change and collective complacency around the natural resources that remain on this planet are becoming ever more apparent.
“Addressing sustainability and carbon footprint in dentistry is a challenge, like it is for healthcare in general which is increasingly under the spotlight around sustainability.
“Dentistry involves a lot of waste resources (energy, water, consumables) and single-use plastics, but we as a practice and as individuals have always tried to do what we can to minimise our own waste production with a longstanding commitment to recycle and reuse.
“This charter is all about taking that to the next level to help offset our carbon footprint, minimise our environmental impact, while supporting and developing sustainable farming where trees are planted.”
One80 Dental is a specialist-led advanced dental centre providing high-quality patient care from dental implants to dentures, smile design and cosmetic dentistry to orthodontics and gum disease, behavioural management, and general dentistry.
Nigel and his wife Zoe, one80 dental practice manager, have also personally planted over 400 saplings in Derbyshire over the past six months as part of an ongoing personal project. He added, “For more than 20 years, we have been helping our patients achieve exceptional results no matter how bad they feel their dental problems might be.
“Making that difference in people’s lives is incredibly rewarding, but we know there is a planetary price for that, and through collective and individual actions we are committed to positive change.”
