A link to dental history

More than 200 dental students from Dundee University descended on the jaw-dropping Atholl Palace Hotel in Pitlochry recently for their annual dental ball and got more than they bargained for during their stay.

The group were treated to an extra special trip to the hotel museum which houses the historic dental chair which was an in-house service offered to guests when the hotel first opened its doors in 1884.

Sitting in the historic chair – which comes fully equipped with the Victorian dental tools – was a jaw-dropping experience for the students who are much more accustomed to a more modern approach to dentistry.

The students enjoyed the facilities at the hotel which housed their ‘mad-hatter’s tea party’ themed event in the grand Atholl Suite which certainly got the students smiling. The group also took advantage of the team-building activities onsite including the zip wire.

Louise Campbell, lead organiser of the annual event, said: “"Our Dental Ball at Atholl Palace was fantastic and our experience with the Victorian dentist chair made us appreciate how far things have come.

“The link to the dental history of Atholl Palace made our experience all the more special and really showed us how lucky we are with the modern day techniques we have in our dental school."
