Call for dentists to fill in COVID-19 mental health survey

08 April 2020

UK dentists are invited to fill in a mental health survey amid the COVID-19 crisis.

The aim of the study is to evaluate the psychological reactions of dental staff during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Mental Health and Coping During COVID-19 among dental staff: A multinational survey is the initiative of Dr Maayn Shacham, DMD – Ariel University, Israel, Prof Menachem Ben-Ezra, PhD – Ariel University, Israel and Prof Eitan Mijiritsky, DMD – Tel-Aviv University School of Dental Medicine, Israel.

They aim to evaluate dentists' thoughts and feelings as medical staff since the COVID-19 outbreak worldwide as they believe 'there is the utmost importance to evaluate dentists who belong to less-studied attending medical staff during times of medical outbreaks'.

The survey relates to the period of working as a dentist during the COVID-19 outbreak.

They write: 'Medical staff (including dental staff) and other healthcare providers may be exposed to COVID-19 as part of their work as well as to other complex medical situations. These events entail different risk factors and may produce stress, burden and emotional overload.

'These situations may have a detrimental effect on mental and physical health of the medical staff with potential reduction in the quality of provided treatment.'

Dentist Julian Caplan, who shared the request on his Facebook page, said: 'I was asked by my friend Prof Eitan Mijiritsky to help with an international research project he is carrying out on the mental health impact of COVID-19 on dentists.

'It takes only five minutes to fill the questionnaire and it is anonymous. Prof Eitan is hoping for 200 questionnaires to represent the UK dentists in the study.'
