Birmingham Metropolitan College (BMet) has presented a Fellowship Award to a former student who is now senior leader at a global dental implantology company.

Stephen Booth, Country Manager at Straumann UK received the Fellowship in recognition of the collaborative links he instigated and developed between the further education college and the dental technology industry.

Surrey based Booth was instrumental in bringing cutting-edge equipment to the college through an onsite Straumann Centre of Excellence.  Pioneering equipment including the StraumannCares CadCam system, plus technical support and consumable resources have enabled over 140 full and part time students to further develop their skills in implant dentistry, as well as in restorative and regenerative solutions.

The training centre’s launch in November 2013, led to Booth facilitating master classes where Straumann experts shared their knowledge and experiences with students and staff.  With his endorsement, a series of continuous professional development training days have also been held at the college for dental practitioners from across the country.

Expressing his delight for the award, Stephen Booth said: “It is an honour to be recognised in this way.

“When I studied at the college, I was incredibly passionate about the creative side of dental technology, through the principles of design and the specific materials used to sculpt individual dental devices.  The CadCam systems and software that BMet students are using continue to push the boundaries of this creativity, while encouraging them to be more aware of the employment opportunities the industry has to offer.

He continued: “I firmly believe that employers have a big part to play in helping future professionals thrive. Things change quite dramatically in dental technology and it can be very difficult for education institutions and even private practices and laboratories to keep abreast of new and emerging technologies. For us to provide BMet students with such direct industry access greatly enhances their professional understanding of what the market is like now and how it will look in future.”

Stephen completed a five year national diploma in dental technology at the college. After qualifying, he ventured into the sector by producing dental appliances. He joined Straumann in 1997, and has progressed within the company to now lead the UK arm of the global corporation.

Birmingham Metropolitan College Principal, Andrew Cleaves said: “It gives the college great pleasure to present Stephen with his Fellowship.  As part of our alumni and now an industry leader he continues to be an excellent role model for all our students and aspiring professionals.

“On behalf of college students, staff and the governing body, I congratulate Stephen and offer my thanks for his much valued support and continuing friendship.”
