Discover the latest facts and figures, innovations and thinking affecting the practice and business of dentistry at BDIA Dental Showcase 2015.

The event takes place on October 22-24, at the Birmingham NEC.  It is one of the UK’s biggest and best attended dental trade shows with over 350 exhibitors demonstrating new technologies, techniques and services.

Being ‘in the know’ is vital for the success of any business and with research showing that nearly 70 per cent of dentists looking to expand their businesses within the next five years, there’s no better time to find out what’s new in dentistry.

Among the many attractions at this year’s Dental Showcase is an exclusive series of free mini lectures, presented by leading industry experts.  It offers a wide and varied range of subjects, including:

Exploring new horizons

With over 650 practices, mydentist is one of Europe’s largest networks of practices.  In this presentation, Steve McCarron looks at how becoming part of mydentist lets owners join its success story; he will explain the reasons why a practice owner might consider selling to mydentist, the steps involved, how to maximize value and the support provided during and after sale.  He will share with delegates the type of practices mydentist are interested in acquiring as they continue to provide NHS dentistry, as well as developing a private, specialist offering.

Producing and maintaining a perfect finish on anterior restorations

The headline sponsor of Dental Showcase, Oral B, hosts a special lecture on the latest techniques to help delegates achieve a high quality finish on anterior restorations. Presented by Thomas O’Connor, a board director of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, and quality improvement fellow for The King’s Fund and Health Education, East of England, this informative lecture will also introduce innovative products that will help maintain the finish for longer.

Better understanding of how banks assess lending propositions

Financing for initial purchase or expansion and investing in new equipment or premises is vital for the future health or growth of a business. Join Ian Crompton of Lloyds Bank to find out how financial institutions evaluate potential loans, current and future issues and the impact of recent regulatory changes.  Through practical case studies and scenarios, Ian will guide delegates through the process, evaluating ‘goodwill’ from a banking perspective and how to give proposals the greatest chance of success.

Ergonomic sitting in dental practice

Back and posture problems are an increasing issue for society as a whole and the dental profession in particular.  This lecture by Sari Hintikka-Varis of Salli Systems, the specialist seating company, discusses how back degeneration with inevitable pain and shoulder tension, poor circulation, joint problems, and genital health problems are among the ailments caused by sitting disorders.  Sari offers advice on ways to prevent such issues and how to introduce ‘sitting health’ as a practical and important concept within practices.

Cerezen: clinical trial overview

Cerezen is a revolutionary new device that can reduce the symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorders and related conditions, including grinding of teeth and headache.  It does this by utilising removable, custom made inserts that are placed within the ear canal.  In this session Rob Jagger shares the highly encouraging results Cerezen has achieved in clinical trials, how it works and how it can be incorporated into practice.

As well as the series of over 50 lectures for dental teams to attend, there will also be the opportunity to get the facts behind the BDIA’s important Counterfeit and Substandard Instruments and Devices Initiative (CSIDI).  Poor quality and even illegal products are a growing problem for the UK dental profession.  This initiative aims to raise awareness and to help prevent the risks associated with substandard products.

About the CSIDI, Mick Armstrong, chair of the BDA Principal Executive Committee, said, “The BDA encourages all dentists to source equipment from legitimate, reputable manufacturers and suppliers who can demonstrate that the necessary legal requirements are being met.  That will ensure both the quality of equipment purchased, and that dentists, their colleagues and patients are protected.”

The CSIDI is one of many initiatives and collaborations the BDIA is currently undertaking.  Delegates can find out more at Dental Showcase, including the new BDIA Code of Practice for CPD to help maintain the quality of CPD, a Dental Industry Manifesto championing a number of industry wide issues, and a strategic partnership with the BDA that fosters support for areas of mutual interest.

Delegates may also wish to check out the new Dietary Zone, supported by The Dairy Council, which looks at the latest thinking in the link between diet and oral health, and how to help patients by providing appropriate advice.
