This article will consider how a dentist with little or no orthodontic experience can begin treating appropriate cases with cosmetically-focused fixed appliances for longterm success.

Cosmetically-focused orthodontics (also known as short-term orthodontics) can be defined as orthodontic treatment that focuses on the alignment of teeth in the aesthetic zone, has no detrimental effect on the occlusion and can be completed in less than nine months.
These teeth straightening systems offer a great solution for the vast majority of adults who are unhappy, self-conscious or embarrassed about their smile. In a world where the digital superhighway is king, many people are now researching the options for themselves and are often able to be quite specific with their dentist about what they want, such as speedy orthodontic treatment.
Beyond offering a quick solution, one of the great benefits of cosmetically-focused orthodontics is that the systems tend to be kinder to the occlusion than traditional orthodontic treatment, making it an ideal offering for the general
practice.
To be clear, that is not to say that the occlusion is not affected, but rather that that the aim of cosmetically-focused orthodontics is to increase symmetry, improving occlusion and addressing aesthetic concerns rather than achieving a ‘textbook’ class 1 result.
The ability to move teeth relatively quickly and easily into a better position opens up a whole new realm of possibility when it comes to minimally invasive dentistry
The key to success with cosmetically-focused orthodontics is selecting appropriate patients for treatment which, of course, requires training. Depending upon the system you choose, you can be technically prepared and feel confident to get started after as little as one day of instruction.
Cfast, for example, offers the opportunity to become an accredited provider in just one day, with courses taking place on a regular basis. Alternatively, dentists can choose to have a bespoke in-practice training courses for the whole team, performed by a dentist experienced in cosmeticallyfocused orthodontics.
It is also important to partner with a company that offers first-class lab work, specialist back-up and experienced one-to-one guidance and advice from experts in cosmetically-focused orthodontics following accreditation – preferably free of charge.
If you want to be able to your offer patients a more conservative, realistic way of treating and providing good cosmetic dentistry, consider cosmetically-focused orthodontics – the fastest growing movement in UK dentistry.
