The UK regulator of dental practice, the General Dental Council (GDC), has successfully prosecuted a man for unlawfully practising dentistry.

By law all dentists, dental nurses, dental technicians, clinical dental technicians, dental hygienists, dental therapists and orthodontic therapists must be registered with the GDC to work in the UK. This is to ensure only appropriately qualified and skilled dental professionals are part of the dental team looking after patients.

On Monday June 14, 2013 Mr Clive Winter appeared at Guildford Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty to the offence of unlawfully holding himself out as being prepared to practise dentistry, contrary to sections 38 (1) and (2) of the Dentists Act 1984.

On June 1, 2012, Clive Winter unlawfully practised dentistry at Unit F6-7, The Mayford Centre, Smarts Heath Road, Woking in Surrey

He has been fined £250, ordered to pay a £15 victim surcharge and costs to the GDC of £1,310.48.

Mr Winter has never been registered with the GDC as either a dentist or dental care professional.

Patients can check their dental professional is registered by logging on to the GDC’s website.
