Vivienne Wootten previews the British Dental Conference and Exhibition.

Manchester Central Convention Complex, with its purpose built lecture theatres, is once again hosting the British Dental Conference and Exhibition this April. The 2014 programme sees the widest range of sessions ever put together by the British Dental Association and features expert speakers who will examine topics including:

  •  Caries management
  •  Composite restorations
  •  Cosmetic dentistry
  •  Endodontics
  •  Evidence-based dentistry
  •  Gerodontology
  •  Management of Implants
  •  Mouth cancer
  •  Occlusion and TMD
  •  Oral surgery
  •  Orthodontics
  •  Periodontal disease
  •  Prosthodontics
  •  Regenerative dentistry
  •  Restorative dentistry
  •  Tooth wear management

To gain full access to this programme, you will need to register for a conference pass (to register simply call 0870 166 6625 or visit www.bda.org/conference). Prices for this vary depending on whether you are a member of the BDA or not and also depend on what tier of membership you have. Some members have a full three-day pass included with their membership. Many conference pass sessions are suitable for the whole team so the BDA is offering significantly reduced prices for dental care professionals.

As well as the conference programme there is also a thriving programme of short seminars, demonstrations and workshops taking place in the exhibition hall. All these activities are free to attend and just require advanced registration for an exhibition pass. Conference pass holders also get full access to these activities.

Verifiable CPD

The Demonstration theatre offers practical, hands-on sessions for the whole team and will be presented by a range of experts demonstrating on phantom head simulators and illustrating scenarios through role-play enactments. This watch-and-learn programme will feature on all three days of the event.

Back by popular demand, the Innovation zone will showcase the key innovative developments in dentistry and will allow delegates to see demonstrations of products that are contributing to the future of dentistry. Visitors can gain 30 minutes of free verifiable CPD by visiting the Innovation zone.

In the Training essentials theatre, sponsored by Oral B, there will be a mixture of 30 minute clinical, business and personal development sessions specifically designed for all members of the dental team. Check the programme to see which sessions are appropriate for your job role.

Added to this, new for 2014 is the Advice zone, which offers free 15 minute one-to-one consultations with a range of experts. Whether your CV needs an overhaul, you want to know more about decontamination regulations or you want to learn about post-graduate courses to further your career, the Advice zone is the place to visit.

Another new feature for 2014 is the Speakers corner. This provides speakers the opportunity to reach out to the audience and present for 15 minutes in a more informal environment. Presentations will range from clinical hot tips through to sessions based on personal experience discussing lifestyle and other issues relevant to dentists.

Benefits

The exhibition provides a fantastic opportunity to see what’s new in the dental world, compare products from different suppliers and make those all-important purchases. A number of companies offer significant discounts on their products at the event plus there are always the free giveaways to take home.

Once again the event will be offering the ever popular complimentary massages at dedicated massage areas in the exhibition hall, courtesy of D-Stress and Go, an experienced team of trained massage therapists. Ten minute sessions are free to all conference pass and exhibition pass holders (subject to availability) and can be booked on the day at the massage areas.

Lastly, if you are around on the opening day, you are welcome to join the BDA for a drink when the exhibition is open until 7pm. It’s an ideal opportunity to talk to exhibitors, catch up with colleagues and enjoy the buzz of this fantastic exhibition.
