An International Osteology Symposium will be taking place shortly. Of course the symposia are one of the core tasks of the foundation. In line with its purpose, the Osteology Foundation aims to promote research, training and cooperation between research and industry in the field of bone and soft tissue regeneration. The Osteology symposia fulfil all the three tasks mentioned:
- They offer a high level of further education to both practitioners and scientists.
- They present the results of new studies and trends which can be used by other scientists as a basis and inspiration for their further research work.
- They ultimately make regular contact and exchange possible between scientists, practitioners and industry.
In addition to the symposia there are other activities intended to meet the foundation's purpose.
An important task of the foundation is to fund scientific studies. Since its establishment in 2003 the foundation has evaluated 303 projects from 38 countries and provided funding to the best ones. Many of the study results have already been published in peer-reviewed journals or are being presented at the Osteology symposia. We have recently modified the application procedure so as to be able to foster yet more interesting projects. Instead of only one deadline there are now two annual dates on which applications for funding can be submitted to the foundation. To further improve our offer for applicants, we have set up a platform through which people can submit study requests to the Osteology Foundation online. Moreover the foundation will shortly be launching the Osteology Research Academy to promote the quality of research and evidence-based dentistry.
The Osteology Research Academy is geared towards scientists and clinicians from all over the world and offers theoretical and practical continued training and education in scientific techniques. The course system has a modular structure: young researchers can attend basic courses; experienced scientists can deepen their knowledge on specific methods or research fields. The courses are carefully selected and designed by the foundation's Curriculum Committee to meet every expectation of the attendees and to ensure high-impact teaching. The speakers and teachers are qualified experts from the Osteology research network and external partners from accredited institutions.
Foundation
The foundation has just set up the Osteology Expert Council. Currently it is a still small group of acknowledged scientists from successful research teams. The Expert Council is under the patronage of the foundation and is destined to become a large international network of scientists and clinicians with great expertise in regenerative therapies. The consolidated knowledge and experience of these experts will form the basis for the development of new clinical concepts, first rate further education and for creating scientific and clinical guidelines for research and therapy.
In addition, for some years now the foundation has been organising regular 'expert meetings' to which we invite experts from a broad range of disciplines to discuss a current issue. These interdisciplinary discussions in small groups facilitate a unique exchange of know-how and have frequently formed the starting point for new research collaboration.
