Standards for education

Volume 29 · Issue 10

The General Dental Council (GDC) has opened a consultation on changes to its Standards for Education and Preparing for Practice documents. The consultation will close on May 26 2014.

The review provides an opportunity to update the documents in light of the new Standards for the Dental Team and Scope of Practice and ensure that they reflect the recommendations of the Report of the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust - Public Inquiry. A number of areas that might be amended have also been identified following feedback from Quality Assurance (QA) inspectors, programme providers and the QA Operations Team.

The Standards for Education is the regulatory tool used by the GDC to ensure that a programme of education and training leading to registration as a dentist or dental care professional is fit for purpose. Education providers must be able to demonstrate that qualifying students have achieved the learning outcomes outlined by the GDC in Preparing for Practice: Dental Team Learning Outcomes for Registration (2011).

The GDC is not proposing to make major changes or review its overall approach to Quality Assurance of education and training at this stage, but would like to hear your views on any changes you feel may be needed in the future.
