The British Dental Association (BDA) is naming the 14 leading lights of dentistry for 2016. The BDA's Honours and Awards are a chance say thank you to those who generously have given their time and expertise for the greater good.

Honorary Membership

Stephen Hancocks OBE and Professor Mahesh Verma receive Honorary Membership.

Honorary Membership is considered to be one of the BDA's highest honours; one which is rarely awarded.

Stephen is well known as editor in chief at the BDJ and is being honoured for his work as a leading writer and speaker in the field for many years. He took over as editor of the BDJ in 2004 and is responsible for developing the scientific and academic profile of the BDJ.

Mahesh is currently director-principal at the Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, New Delhi, India and is being honoured for his staunch support of the BDA and for his outstanding work both nationally and internationally.

Fellowship

Colwyn Jones is awarded a Fellowship for his outstanding work over the years, including the contribution he has made to dental public health in Scotland.

Colwyn is a consultant in dental public health and honorary senior lecturer for NHS Health Scotland and is also the east branch representative on the BDA's Scottish Dental Practice Committee.

Distinguished membership

Distinguished Membership is conferred upon Peter Bateman, former chair of the Salaried Dentists Committee; Philip Henderson, principal executive committee member for Northern Ireland and former chair of the Northern Ireland branch; and Brett Sinson, general dental practice committee member.

Distinguished Membership honours long, exceptional and valuable service to the BDA and acknowledges personal commitment to the association.

Philip has made a significant contribution to dentistry in Northern Ireland over many years and shown extraordinary dedication to making the lives of both patients and dentists better.

Peter is well known for his work in community dentistry and is being honoured for his work serving on various BDA committees for many decades.

Brett has been a stalwart of both his local BDA and by being a representative nationally on the GDPC; he has contributed significantly to lobbying government and improving the working lives of dentists.

Life membership

This year, Life Membership has been conferred upon Professor Alex Milosevic, Professor Ario Santini and Stephanie Twidale.

Life Membership is given for long and valuable service to the BDA, particularly at the local level, but also for representation at the national level.

Alex has served as a hospital representative on his local branch council for many years and is a former branch president. He's always been supportive of students and encouraged them to get involved in the branch and develop their careers. His wider work includes internationally recognised research on tooth wear and dental erosion.

Ario is being honoured for his 60 years of valuable service to the BDA, his contribution to his local branch and for his work nationally. An active member of his local branch, Ario has served as branch president and also has sat on the BDA's Scottish Council and Representative Board.

Stephanie is well known for contributing and being an active member of the BDA since she graduated. Her distinguished career has included working in the community dental services, as well as in general practice and as a dental officer in the Territorial Army, including serving in Iraq.

John Tomes Medal

The John Tomes Medal has been awarded to Professor Jimmy Steele CBE and Professor Damien Walmsley.

The John Tomes Medal honours members of the dental profession and of scientific eminence, or persons distinguished in medical or allied services, for their outstanding service to the dental profession or the BDA.

Jimmy is emeritus professor, head of school and professor of oral health services research at the University of Newcastle, and has made an immense contribution to the profession, through his work on dental contract reform, as well as in his daily working life.

Professor Steele was honoured with his award at the BDA/BDJ Winter Lecture on October 19, 2016.

Damien has given outstanding service to the BDA as a scientific advisor for many years, responding to challenges and issues raised in dentistry, often by the media.

A professor of restorative dentistry at the University of Birmingham, he has always been an avid supporter of students and researchers. He is currently active in the field of ultrasonics and is a world authority on its application in the clinical practice of dentistry.

Roll of Distinction

Admission to the Roll of Distinction is awarded to Brian Schottlander and Andy Williams, and honours outstanding service to UK dentistry.

Brian receives his honour for his work as a leader in the dental industry. As managing director of Schottlander, he has been an enthusiastic advocate of education and training within the industry.

Andy worked as the senior employment relations officer at the BDA and he passionately fought for salaried dentists rights, as well as supporting many dentists in Wales and across the rest of the UK on various issues. Andy passed away last year and is very sadly missed.

Certificate of Merit

The Certificate of Merit for Services to the Dental Profession is awarded to Nazli Imtiaz, specialty doctor in paediatric dentistry at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and an out of hours dentist at Whittington Health.

Nazli was nominated for her work with the BDA Metropolitan Branch. As secretary since 2004, she has helped ensure the branch has had well organised, high quality meetings and contributed to the ongoing success of the branch.

Honours and Awards ceremony at BDA Conference

This year's winners will officially be presented with their honour at a special event at the British Dental Conference and Exhibition, which takes place May 25-27, 2017, in Manchester.
